A tourist travelling in Norway discovered that he had spent nearly all
his money, and there was just enough to buy his passage back to England. He
thought the matter over and decided that it was only a two-day journey and he
could easily do without food.
So, he bought a ticket and went on
board the ship. He closed his ears to the sound of the lunch bell, and when
dinner-time came, he refused the invitation of a fellow-traveller to come with
him to dinner, saying that he did not feel well.
Next morning he did not come to
breakfast, pretending that he had overslept. At lunch-time he again managed to
keep out of the way. At dinner-time, however, he was so hungry that he felt he
could not stand it any longer.
“I’m going to eat,” he said, “even if
they throw me overboard afterwards.” At dinner table he ate everything put in
front of him. When he could hold no more he was strong enough to face the
waiter.
“Bring me the bill,” he said to the fellow. “The bill, sir?” said the
waiter. “Yes,” answered the traveller. “There isn’t any bill,” was the reply,
“on this ship meals are included in the fare”.
