Education in the USA

1. Elementary education begins at the age of 6 with the first grade (form).

2. The program of studies in the elementary school is different in different schools.

3. It includes English, Arithmetic, Geography, History, Natural Science, Physical Training, Singing and others. 

4. The elementary school is followed by high school. 

5. It consists of 2 parts: Junior high school and Senior high school. 

6. Junior high school is for the children aged 12 until they are 15. 

7. Senior high school is attended by students until they are 18. 

8. The high school is generally larger and accommodates pupils from four or five elementary schools. 

9. During the school year the students study 4 or 5 subjects. 

10. Students must complete a certain number of courses to receive a diploma or a certificate of graduation. 

11. To help Americans develop social and political skills, schools have added a large number of activities outside classroom studies to daily life. 

12. Competitive sports are perhaps the most important of these activities. 

13. Every high school has football, basketball and baseball teams. 

14. Most schools publish their own student newspapers; have orchestras, drama groups, etc. 

15. There are clubs and activities for almost every student interest and they help students to become more successful in later life. 

16. Most common types of higher education are the colleges and universities. 

17. The four-year undergraduate studies lead to a bachelor’s degree in arts and in science or college diploma. 

18. The bachelor’s degree can be followed by professional studies. 

19. Two - year graduate studies lead to a master’s degree.
