I am not a great cinema-goer. I like to spend my free time watching
films at home or through the Internet. Last week my teacher of English asked us
to watch an American film “It’s a wonderful life” and write a review to this
movie. Frankly speaking, I dislike black and white films but I must do the
task. I watched this movie and liked it so much that it stands out in my memory
quite vividly.
“It’s a wonderful life” is a screen version of the short story “The
Greatest Gift” by Philip Van Doren Stern. It is a feature, widescreen and music
film. Unfortunately this movie is black and white because it was produced in
1946. One simple life, one simple idea led to the creation of the best film
which is considered one of the most loved films in America and traditionally
showed during the Christmas celebrations. It is a masterpiece of American
cinematograph. I enjoyed this film from the beginning to the end.
“It’s a wonderful life” was released by the Liberty Films Studio. It was
the company’s first production. This film achieved a worldwide fame because it
was very positive and optimistic. It won 5 Oscars. The whole cast was skillful.
James Stewart, Donna Reed, Henry Travers starred in this picture.
The fantasy comedy-drama movie was produced and directed by Frank Capra.
He made this film at the peak of his creative power and he tried to show the
meaning of our life. His idea was unique. Frank Capra created a film story
about an ordinary man, George Bailey
who lived in a small town of Bedford Falls. This man was honest, hard working
and very faithful. In spite of his dream to travel around the world George
Bailey devoted his life to the family, friends and all the citizens of his
native town. He helped them to survive in difficult situations. On Christmas
Eve George Bailey lost his temper because of some financial problems: his uncle
lost a lot of money. Bailey decided to commit suicide. The angel Clarence
showed the importance of his life in the lives of townspeople. His compatriots
were proud of him and his building company. They also understood how important
was Bailey’s activity to their town and that’s why all of them were ready to
help him in his financial problems and bring their money to Bailey’s house.
George also received a book as a gift from his angel with the words: “Remember
no man is a failure who has friends”. These words express the main idea of the
film.
This movie is more than a story of one man this film is like a kind of
tour around America at the beginning of the 20th century, a great depression,
World War II, a post war period and, of course, this film is about love,
friendship and happiness. I advise everybody to watch this film and believe in
miracles in your life.
