Stonehenge

Midsummer’s Day, June 24th, is the longest day of the year. On that day you can see a very old custom at Stonehenge, in Wiltshire, England. It is one of Europe’s biggest stone circles. A lot of the stones are ten or twelve metres high.

The earliest part of Stonehenge is nearly 5,000 years old. But what was Stonehenge? A holy place? A market? A magic circle? Or it was a kind of calendar? Scientists believe that the Druids used it for a calendar.

The people who started Stonehenge were very primitive. They used no metal and their tools were made of stone, bone and wood.

The builders could not read or write, so they left no records of the work. There have been many theories about Stonehenge. Some people said that travellers from outer space had built it. Others said that it was a «powerhouse» as it had been built in the centre of enormous electrical energy.

The Druids were the priests in Britain 2,000 years ago. They used the sun and the stones at Stonehenge to know the start of months and seasons.

There are Druids in Britain today, too. And every June 24th a lot of them go to Stonehenge. On that morning the sun shines on one famous stone - the Heel stone. For the Druids this is a very important moment in the year. But for a lot of British people it’s just a strange old custom.

St. Paul’s Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral is a masterpiece of the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren. It took him 35 years to construct this beautiful building. St. Paul’s Cathedral was completed 12 years before his death.

When Wren was seriously ill and could not move himself, he asked his people to bring him out in a chair in front of his masterpiece once a year and the famous architect admired his own great artwork.

He died after catching a chill while travelling to his London home in February 1723 and was buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral on March, 5 under the south aisle of the choir at the east end. On Wren’s tomb you can read the following: «If you want to see my monument, look around». The architect considered St. Paul’s Cathedral his own monument, which he had created himself.

St. Paul’s Cathedral has got the huge dome with a golden bell and cross on the top. The name of the biggest bell is Big Paul, its weight is about 16 tons. The Cathedral is full of monuments. There is the Whispering Gallery, which runs round the dome. People say that if someone whispers close to the wall on one side, a person with his ear close to the wall on the other side can hear what is said. Many famous people are buried in the Cathedral: Nelson, Wellington and others. St. Paul’s Cathedral was destroyed in 1666, the year of the Great Fire of London. Then the architect rebuilt it. Now it is a beautiful building with many columns and towers, which attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world every year.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is a Royal residence. It was built in 1703 by the Duke of Buckingham. It is now the official home of Queen Elizabeth and the British Royal Family. It is a beautiful building which contains six hundred rooms and three miles of red carpet. It is like a small town with a police station, two post offices, a hospital, a bar, two sport clubs, a disco, a cinema and a swimming- pool. About 700 people work for the Palace. Two men look after the 300 clocks. On the top of the palace there is a flag. If it is down, it means that the Queen is not at home. But if it’s up, it means that the Queen is in her residence.

Every day at 11 o’clock in the morning there is a famous ceremony near Buckingham Palace. This is the changing of the guard. Many tourists want to see this ceremony, as thirty guardsmen march to the Palace and take the place of the retiring guard.

The British museum was opened on January 15^th 1759. It contains old manuscripts and works of art from Britain, ancient Egypt, Rome and Greece.

The Houses of Parliament is not an old building. It dates only from the 19^th century. This building is in the Gothic style. When the Parliament has a sitting, a flag flies from the Victoria tower.

Westminster Abbey was founded in the 11^th century. There are many tombs, monuments and statues here. For nearly one thousand years all the kings and queens of England (41 in all) have been crowned here and many of them are buried here too.

Susan: Yes, you're quite right. I'm tired of shopping. Wait, I heard something of the place... Hyde Park... Please, remind me of it.

Mike: Oh, I see you're really too tired if you forget about the best-known park in London! Hyde Park together with Kensington Gardens and Regent's Park are still called Royal because many centuries ago the kings of England usually hunted there. Now these places are the most favourite ones for a lot of people. You can walk on the grass or even lie down there if it's warm enough.

John: Great! Let's go there immediately! As far as I remember visitors can also go horse-riding. I'm fond of riding! Don't you mind, Susan?

Susan: I don't. I want to go there too. How can we get there, Mike?

Mike: We'll drive there by car. It'll take us about half an hour, if we don't get into the traffic jam.

Trafalgar Square is a geographical centre of London. It was laid out during the first part of the 19^th century to commemorate the naval victory of Britain, in which Admiral Lord Nelson took part and was fatally wounded. There is the Nelson Column with the statue of Admiral Nelson on the top in Trafalgar Square. At the base of it you can see four bronze lions which are guarding the Column. In the north of Trafalgar Square there is the National Gallery which exhibits all schools of European painting from the 13^th to the 19^th century and includes works by Van Dyck, Rubens, El Greco, Goya, Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt. Not far from Trafalgar Square there is a quite little street with very ordinary houses. It is Downing Street and for the last 200 years at Number 10 each Prime Minister of Britain has been living there.

London and its history

1. The Romans founded a settlement on the river Thames 2000 years ago.

2. They built a seaport and called it Londinium. In Celtic “londin” means “wild”.

3. In 410 AD the Romans left Britain and the native Britons who had moved to London kept the settlement alive as a trading centre.

4. Then Germanic tribes attacked London. The Saxons began to control this city.

5. The Saxon king Edward the Confessor built a church. This church became Westminster Abbey.

6. In 1066 William the Conqueror was crowned in Westminster Abbey. He built a castle and called it the White Tower. Today the White Tower forms the central part of the Tower of London.

7. London grew rapidly and developed into a world trading centre in the Medieval Ages.

8. The Civil war, the Plague and the Great Fire broke London in the 17 century.

9. The Plague, a terrible epidemic, was spread by infected rats. More than 100,000 people died at that time.

10. After the Great Fire most of the City lay in ashes because the houses were made of wood but Londoners rebuilt the City with bricks and stones.

11. Since that time it has continued to grow in size.
